Safari photography is one of the most rewarding and challenging genres of wildlife photography. You're shooting in ever-changing light, from a moving vehicle, with unpredictable subjects ÔÇö and the margin for error is slim.

Camera Settings for Wildlife

Speed is everything in wildlife photography. Set your camera to Shutter Priority (Tv/S mode) and use a minimum shutter speed of 1/1000s for moving animals. Set Auto ISO with a maximum of 12800 for modern mirrorless cameras.

The Golden Hours

The soft, warm light of the first and last hour of each day transforms ordinary shots into magazine-worthy images. Plan your game drives around sunrise and sunset ÔÇö this is when most game is active anyway.

Composition in the Field

Resist the urge to center every animal. Use the rule of thirds, include environmental context (a lone acacia, the open plains), and shoot at eye level with your subject whenever possible.
